Twin Lakes

These lakes are surrounded by steep hills and offer breathtaking views of the Virunga Volcanoes—where you might just catch a glimpse of a gorilla!

Five of the eight Virunga volcanoes

Lake Ruhondo and Lake Burera, also known as the Twin Lakes, are a hidden gem in Rwanda that many travellers surprisingly overlook. Why? Well, we’re not quite sure either! This is an absolutely stunning area, reminiscent of the lakes in the Scottish Highlands—but even better!

These lakes in northern Rwanda meet at a point where water flows from one into the other. It is said that this strip of land was formed by lava, making it incredibly fertile. Along the shores, you’ll find lush vegetation, banana trees, tea and coffee plantations, and more. You’ll also spot plenty of fishermen—why not hop on a boat and glide across the lakes, weaving between them?

From the water, the views of the mountains are even more spectacular. The lakes sit beneath the towering peaks of Sabyinyo, Muhabura, Bisoke, and Gahinga, and on a clear day, you can see as many as five of the eight Virunga volcanoes!

The Twin Lake Route

Because the lakes border the mountains, you can also go for a hike to enjoy breathtaking views! It’s a unique but fairly challenging trek, so if you prefer a more relaxed option, you can explore the area by car. Winding paths take you through this stunning landscape, past local villages, and offer plenty to see along the way.

If that sounds too easy for you, this is also an incredible spot for mountain biking. Go all out and tackle the Five Volcanoes route, or opt for the Twin Lakes trail. You can even spread it over two days, spending the night with a spectacular view and enjoying a scenic boat trip on the lakes. And for birdwatchers—this place is pure paradise!

But that’s not all!

While you're out on the lake in that carved-out canoe, why not paddle towards one of the islands? Visiting these islands is perfect for photography, and the locals will welcome you with warm smiles. Learn about their customs and traditions and discover why they cherish island life so much. Bring a drink along in your boat and enjoy a stunning sundowner—there’s no better way to end the day!
