Nyerere National Park
Nyerere National Park is the perfect place to wander through Africa’s largest wildlife park. Its diverse landscape, stretching along wide rivers and vast plains without other tourists in sight, makes safari here feel like a true discovery again.
Safari in Africa’s Largest Park
Off-the-beaten-track Tanzania at its very best! Forget the Serengeti for a moment. Nyerere National Park, formerly known as the Selous Game Reserve, is Africa’s largest protected wildlife area. So vast, in fact, that you need several days to properly explore it by car, often without encountering another safari jeep. And that is exactly how it feels.
Here you discover a landscape that constantly shifts from open savannah to dense riverine forests. The Rufiji River cuts through the terrain, drawing animals like a magnet. Safari here becomes slower and more intense. Less polished, less predictable, and precisely because of that, incredibly impressive. Elephants calmly crossing your path, giraffes disappearing into the bushes, and lions unaccustomed to an audience. Here, you are the guest.
Activities in Nyerere National Park
The sheer size of the park also means there is plenty to do. You don’t experience safari in Nyerere in just one way. It is exactly this variety that makes the place so special.
Selous Boat Safari
What truly makes Nyerere unique is the Rufiji River. This lifeline winds straight through the park and forms the backdrop for one of the most beautiful safari experiences imaginable: a boat safari. Nyerere National Park is one of the few places in Africa where you can experience wildlife from the water. And after the dusty, bumpy roads of a game drive, there is nothing more relaxing than gently drifting along the river, watching wildlife as the sun sets over the water.
From the river, you see the park from a completely different perspective. Hippos grunting lazily along the banks, golden-green crocodiles warming themselves in the sun, and elephants approaching to drink while you quietly glide past. Colorful bird species flutter through the reeds, birds of prey circle overhead, and perhaps you will spot a tower of giraffes cautiously stepping toward the water’s edge.
For us, this is consistently one of the absolute highlights. Especially toward the end of the afternoon, when the light softens and the river slowly turns gold. There are also many waterholes throughout the park, meaning hippos are never far away.
Walking Safari
Exploring Nyerere National Park on foot is an experience that sharpens all your senses. Together with an armed ranger and guide, you head into the bush and learn to read the landscape the way locals do. You follow tracks in the sand, study flora up close, and hear sounds you would never notice from inside a vehicle. It makes you feel small, alert, and fully present. A walking safari allows you to experience Africa in a uniquely pure and intimate way.
Night Game Drive
Once the sun sets and the park is wrapped in darkness, an entirely different world comes alive. During a night game drive, you head out with an experienced ranger in search of animals rarely seen during the day. With a spotlight scanning the savannah, glowing eyes suddenly appear in the dark. Nocturnal predators emerge, hyenas move stealthily through the grass, and you might even catch a glimpse of a leopard on the hunt. The silence, the tension, and the exploration of the bush at night make this safari experience intense and unforgettable.
Classic Game Drive
During a classic game drive, you explore the vast plains, rivers, and forests of Nyerere National Park by safari vehicle. It is the ultimate way to cover large parts of the park while searching for elephants, lions, buffalo, and giraffes. You drive through ever-changing landscapes, stop whenever something unfolds, and let the day surprise you. No route is ever the same, and every game drive tells its own story. And because the park is so enormous, every wildlife encounter feels like a gift.

All Your Frequently Asked Questions About Nyerere National Park
Where exactly is Nyerere National Park located?
Nyerere National Park lies in southern to central Tanzania and is part of the greater Selous ecosystem, far from the busier northern safari routes. It is also one of Africa’s largest wildlife parks.
Why is Selous now called Nyerere National Park?
The park was renamed in honor of Julius Nyerere, Tanzania’s first president. In 2019, the northern part of the former Selous Game Reserve was officially designated as Nyerere National Park.
What types of safaris can you do here?
You can enjoy classic game drives, night game drives, boat safaris along the Rufiji River, and guided walking safaris. This combination is rare to find elsewhere in Africa.
When is the best time to visit Nyerere?
From June to October, the dry season offers ideal safari conditions. During the green season, the landscape is spectacular and quieter, though some parts of the park may be less accessible.
What makes Nyerere different from other safari parks?
The combination of boat safaris, walking safaris, and its enormous size creates a peaceful and adventurous safari experience without mass tourism. For both first-time and experienced safari travelers, Nyerere feels like a breath of fresh air. Less crowded, more adventurous, and filled with a genuine sense of discovery.
How does Nyerere differ from parks like Serengeti or Tarangire?
Where the Serengeti feels iconic and grand, Nyerere feels rawer and quieter. Fewer vehicles, more variation in safari experiences, and a strong sense of remoteness.
