Lake Manyara National Park

Spot the tree-climbing lions, vibrant birds, and splashing hippos amidst the diverse wildlife of this park. Lake Manyara offers a blend of savannahs, swamps, and wildlife in all shapes and sizes. Keep your binoculars at the ready!

Northern Safari Circuit

Lake Manyara National Park: the little brother and underdog of Tanzania’s safari parks. It sits alongside its bigger siblings, the Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park, in Tanzania’s Northern Circuit. Just over 126 kilometres from Arusha, this marshy park is easy to combine with visits to the other parks. While you can explore this park during the day, at Charlie’s, we often choose to venture into the park and meet its residents in the dead of night!

Diversity at its finest!

Lake Manyara National Park spans 325 square kilometres and sits beneath the cliffs of the Manyara Escarpment. Here, you can also marvel at the 600-metre-high, golden-rusty Rift Valley. It’s an incredibly diverse park, with landscapes ranging from savannah to swamp and an evergreen forest. The park boasts 11 ecosystems, all teeming with life.

Disclaimer! Tanzania is a fantastic destination for a safari, but please note that we do not organise trips solely focused on safari adventures.

Birdwatching

Lake Manyara National Park is a birdwatcher’s dream come true. The alkaline lake is home to an incredible variety of bird species! With over 400 species fluttering about, even novice birders will be able to tick plenty off their list. One of the highlights is the stunning sight of flamingos—these artistic, pink birds spend a good amount of time at Lake Manyara during their endless migration, turning the entire lake a rosy hue. You can also spot large waterbirds like pelicans, cormorants, and storks through your binoculars.

Tree-Climbing Lions

The legendary tree-climbing lions are yet another reason to visit this park. During the rainy season, the old mahogany acacias become the ideal hangout and shelter for these lions. These tree-climbing lions are the true trademark of Lake Manyara National Park!

Treetop walkway

In the park, you’ll also find Tanzania’s first Treetop Walkway. Here, you can scramble over suspension bridges as high as 370 metres above the ground! Let go of your fear of heights and make sure to keep an eye out—you might just spot a bird, a monkey, or, if you’re very lucky, an elephant!

Tip from Charlie! If you visit this national park, don’t forget to explore the nearby village of Mto wa Mbu.
