Lake Burera

In the northwest of Rwanda, Lake Burera glistens, surrounded by volcanoes and lush green mountains. Discover this volcanic lake and savour the delicious Rwandan dishes prepared by locals using ingredients from the fertile islands. Pure tranquillity and beauty!

Twin lakes Burera and Ruhondo

From the town of Musanze, you set off towards Lake Burera, not to be confused with the nearby Lake Ruhondo (together known as the Twin Lakes). As you drive along Lake Ruhondo, your unique experience begins with a dreamy journey through the picturesque surroundings. Upon arriving at the larger Lake Burera, you step into a boat, drifting across the water while spotting lively, fluttering birds and slowly making your way towards one of the islands. If you want to admire the lake from above, a short climb reveals a breathtaking panoramic view of the deep blue waters. Joyful children eagerly welcome you to the island, while the older generation prepares a drumming session because this visit is something to celebrate!

Life on an island

Birwa One is the largest island on Lake Burera, home to a close-knit community of 80 families. With sorghum and banana plants, they skilfully brew their own alcohol. Sip on a glass of freshly made beer while the golden sunlight casts a magical glow over the lush green landscape and shimmering blue waters.

The island has a primary school, a small health centre, and all the essentials for daily life. However, every now and then, a short swim or boat ride to a nearby village comes in handy. The local market offers a wider variety of fresh vegetables, fruits, and vibrant fabrics, bustling with lively negotiations between farmers, carpenters, barbers, tailors, and other skilled artisans or traders.

Join traditional fishermen

As soon as the sun sets, the fishermen emerge in their traditional, catamaran-like dugout canoes. Using age-old techniques, they primarily catch Indagara fish (Lake Tanganyika sardines). These tiny fish are packed with protein and Omega-rich fish oil, making them a staple for children in the region. Curious to see how they haul in these miniature catches? Follow the seasoned fishermen as they illuminate the lake with a large lamp, and later, boost your own protein levels with a hearty meal.
