Kruger Sleep Out

Put on your hiking boots, grab your binoculars, and think of your best campfire story. It’s time for an adventure in the wilderness at Guernsey Private Nature Reserve near Greater Kruger. The food is ready and the tent is set up, you and a guide will be camping in a safari park.

Binoculars ready?

It’s time for the bush! For the next two nights, you’ll be staying in the bush, specifically in Greater Kruger. This area lies in the east of South Africa, just outside Kruger National Park. Greater Kruger is a collective term for several private game reserves and is fenced. This means the parks have control over which animals are in the area and can make decisions accordingly. To give you a picture: Kruger National Park itself is not fenced, allowing for free movement of all types of wildlife, including the Big Five.

You’ll be staying in a private game reserve called Guernsey Private Nature Reserve. The reserve is fenced, and there are no large dangerous predators, so you can walk around safely and enjoy a peaceful night in your tent. The park is home to around 200 species of birds, along with giraffes, zebras, and a few stray buffalo.

Leaving Hoedspruit, you’ll head off the tarred road and after about half an hour, you’ll arrive at a small safari lodge in the middle of the bush. You’ll spend your first night in a comfortable chalet, and there’s a small pool to cool off in. Dinner is included and will be served at an open-air restaurant. Early to bed tonight, because tomorrow promises an active day ahead!

Fall asleep in the heart of the African bush.

After breakfast, you’ll have some time to relax before meeting the guide who will accompany you into the bush. Phones off, backpacks on, and off you go into nature! During the walking safari, you’ll have the chance to spot typical African wildlife such as giraffes, gnus, and zebras. The guide will explain the flora and fauna, and point out animal prints and tracks. In the afternoon, you’ll arrive at the spot where you’ll camp for the night, and together with the guide, you’ll set up camp.

Since the park is fenced, they know exactly which animals are present, making it the perfect place to safely overnight in a tent. You’ll sleep in basic comfort on an inflatable mattress in a sleeping bag with a pillow. Once the tents are set up, you’ll gather firewood to light the campfire. Dinner will be cooked on the fire in kettles, and you’ll prepare it together with the guide. As the fire crackles down, and your stomachs are full, it’ll be time to gaze at the stars and share stories around the campfire.

Wimoweh

You’ll likely wake up early today to the sounds of the African wilderness. No roaring lions or stomping elephants, but hundreds of nightingales and impalas grazing in the tall grass. Once the fire is burning again, the kettle goes on to boil water for coffee and breakfast! After packing up the tents, you’ll say goodbye to the camp and walk back to the lodge. Hang on a little bit longer

After the adventures in the bush, you really should stick around because there’s so much more to do.

Discover South Africa’s most famous wildlife park: Kruger National Park. While Greater Kruger is a collection of private game reserves and thus fenced in, Kruger National Park allows free movement of all kinds of wildlife. This means a huge variety of animals. Kruger National Park is the oldest park in Africa and one of the largest game reserves in the world! A must-see for nature lovers with the sheer number of birds and of course, the Big 5 that wander through the park. While this park isn’t exactly off the beaten track, it’s absolutely worth visiting. Apart from its variety of wildlife, it’s also the oldest park in Africa.

Let’s throw in another iconic highlight, as the Panorama Route is definitely a must. You’ve probably guessed it: panoramas are the reason you drive this route. It’s located near Kruger National Park. Without stopping, it takes about 2 hours from Graskop, where the route begins, to the final highlight: Blyde River Canyon. However, you can make amazing stops every 10 km, so be sure to set aside a day for the Panorama Route. Hit the brakes as you approach God's Window. Quickly fix your hair, casually throw your arms up, and snap a picture for the 'Gram. With these kinds of photos on your feed, not only will everyone back home be envious, but you might even become a famous travel blogger!

Our favourite, though, has to be Blyde River Canyon and Three Rondavels—what a view! You look to the right at three massive hills, each over 700 meters high, and to the left, a deep river surrounded by towering mountains. With nearly 100 km of amazing stops, you can truly enjoy a full day here.

Our routes

South Africa is, of course, massive and offers countless beautiful places to explore. Take, for example, the Garden Route. The most popular coastal route in South Africa. Absolutely impressive, but due to the sheer volume of tourism and because we really want to focus on what we’re good at, we’ve decided not to offer this route.

We focus on off-the-beaten-path experiences and routes, away from mass tourism. We want to show our travellers the authentic side of South Africa as much as possible. In South Africa, we choose routes with relatively short travel distances, allowing you to experience safari, nature, tropical coasts, and mountains. With a variety of activities from unique hikes to beautiful boat trips, diving, ziplining, horseback riding, and, as the cherry on top, culture! That’s why we’ve focused on two regions: the truly off-the-beaten-track Western Cape and The Eastern Loop! This way, you can fully enjoy the beauty South Africa has to offer.
