Lake Nakuru

Once famous for its millions of flamingos, this park is now known for its stunning views, lions, birds and both white and black rhinos. But, you're going to have to search!

Black rhinos, white rhinos and pink flamingos

Lake Nakuru National Park sits in the central Rift Valley and is one of the most accessible parks in Kenya. It’s part of the Kenya Lake System in the Great Rift Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its unique ecology and biodiversity. The park is relatively small but gained fame thanks to its huge flamingo population. These days the alkaline lake is about much more than birds. It’s one of the best places in East Africa to spot both black and white rhinos. Being just three to four hours from Nairobi, it’s a popular spot for a day trip. With a mild climate and well maintained roads, Nakuru is easy to explore even during the rainy season.

Things to do around Lake Nakuru

Often seen as a stopover on the way west, this region actually hides some unforgettable experiences.

Lake Nakuru National Park

Even though this is a smaller park, it’s one we absolutely recommend. Thanks to its size, beauty and location, it’s perfect for a self drive safari. You can tour around without worrying about giant elephants blocking your way. What you will find here are flamingos, rhinos and lions. The park is full of viewpoints, with the famous Baboon Cliff offering the best panorama.

Lake Elementaita and Soysambu Conservancy

This is the largest soda lake between Naivasha and Nakuru, surrounded by wide open plains filled with zebras, giraffes, lions and sometimes even leopards. Because of the salty water, you’ll also spot beautiful flamingos, although their numbers have been going down lately. Lake Elementaita is part of the Soysambu Conservancy, which is less known for large wildlife but offers incredible views across the Rift Valley, including Ol Doinyo Eburru and Menengai.

Lake Baringo

Okay, Lake Baringo is not exactly around the corner from Nakuru, but it’s worth the extra effort. Where else can you stay on your own private island? You reach it by boat, passing hippos and crocodiles on the way. You can visit the giraffes at Ruko Conservancy on foot or feed fish eagles from the boat. It takes a bit more to get there, but for travelers seeking peace and quiet it’s an absolute must.
