Chyulu Hills

This volcanic yet incredibly green landscape in Kenya offers peace, wide open space, wildlife and, if you are lucky, views of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Discover a dramatic and dreamlike landscape

Hidden between Amboseli National Park and Tsavo in southeastern Kenya lie the Chyulu Hills. This green hilly landscape is a volcanic mountain range where ancient lava fields blend with low hanging clouds. It is one of the least visited yet easily reachable regions in Kenya, making it perfect for Charlie’s Travels explorers looking for wilderness and connection with nature. This area, part of the Kuku Group Ranch and co-managed by the local Masai, offers lava tunnels, horse riding adventures and multi day camping trips.

Things to do around the Chyulu Hills

Together with the Chyulu Hills rangers we have gathered a few unique activities. This is the best way to truly experience this region.

Kamba settlement

Beyond its stunning nature, the Chyulu Hills area is home to inspiring community initiatives. One of them is the Kamba settlement, a group of mostly elders who decided to come together instead of staying isolated. With our local partner, who is part of this community, you can join them for half a day. They proudly show how they produce sisal, plant trees to support biodiversity and cook for one another. This cultural visit is both moving and memorable.

Visiting caves and camping

This adventure takes you deep into a part of the Chyulu Hills that few travelers ever see. With a four wheel drive you make your way through tall grass and explore one of the caves with a ranger and our local partner. You can choose a short visit to a two hundred meter cave or go for the full experience and venture seven hundred meters into the darkness. After the exploration you drive to your campsite for the night. Somewhere on the ridges of the Chyulu Hills you sleep under the stars in your tent while a ranger keeps watch. Not done yet? The next day you can hike through the rolling hills and enjoy the endless beauty of this landscape.
