Isabis 4x4 Trail to Private Campsite

Overnight road trip!! Off we go to the Isabis 4×4 trail! This trail is pristine, off the beaten track, and best of all: completely private. You’ll drive through the rugged mountain landscape with steep cliffs to the remote campsite where you’ll camp in total freedom. Truly an adventure!

Welcome to Isabis

The Isabis 4×4 trail is located about 130 kilometres southwest of Windhoek. The trail lies within the Gaub River catchment area, though there’s been such a severe drought in the region that the river is mostly dry. Charlie has visited the farm offering this trail, and the farmer has had a tough time in recent years due to the drought. Thankfully (for us), he came up with a new way to make the land useful: the 4×4 trail.

Crossing the 4x4 Trail

This distinctive route winds through ravines and canyons where you’ll cross stretches of river, drive through rough sand, and tackle large boulders. There are different trails in the area, ranging in difficulty from level 1 to 3, so there’s something for all levels. The routes range from 16 km to 45 km and can take anywhere from 3 hours to two days. Along the way, you can stop at picnic spots or take a dip in one of the natural swimming pools.

Want to see Charlie in action?

Next to this, there’s a video where Charlie receives a briefing on the tough 4x4 vehicle you’ll use to tackle the area. The vehicle is specially designed for these types of roads, but you’ll need to know how to handle it properly. Charlie gets a lesson from an expert and discovers all the benefits of a 4x4 vehicle. Now it’s your turn!

And you’ll stay the night…

After an adventurous day, it’s time to unwind from all the exciting moments you’ve experienced. You’ll arrive at the campsite, located in a riverbed between rugged mountains. Want to cook in your bare feet? Or sing along loudly to your favourite road trip song? Go ahead! There are no other travellers around, and you’re completely isolated from the outside world. There’s a flush toilet and a shower with a stunning mountain view.

If camping really isn’t your thing, there’s also a self-catered cottage available. The accommodation is basic but well-equipped!

A Few Practical Things

The simplicity of this campsite is peaceful, and it’s the ideal spot to reflect on your holiday plans or memories. The Isabis Trail can be scheduled either at the beginning or the end of your holiday, as it’s located about 130 kilometres from Windhoek.

Additionally, this trail is only accessible with your own 4×4 rental car, including a rooftop tent. Don’t forget to bring some delicious food for the braai – dried firewood will be provided on arrival for your campfire. Enjoy!
