Drakensberg Mountains: an adventurer's paradise
The mystical Drakensberg Mountains offers imposing peaks, green valleys and bizarre rock formations. Perfect for hikers, birdwatchers and nature lovers. Did you know that this landscape inspired Tolkien for Lord of the Rings? You can experience this magic here too, with or without wine in hand!

The Drakensberg are divided into three regions; a northern, central and southern part. Each region has its own charm and highlights. We'll tell you more about them. Dive into the Drakensberg adventure soon!
Northern Drakensberg
This part of Drakensberg consists of mighty, high peaks and inspiring landscapes. The area feels remote and rugged, giving it a mysterious aura. Here you will find some of Drakensberg's most iconic spots: the Amphitheatre and Tugela Falls.

Must-sees
The AmphitheatreA gigantic crescent-shaped wall of rock stretching over five kilometres. Truly a picture. This area is bursting with beautiful hikes, most of which start from the Royal Natal National Park. You have plenty of opportunities here to soak up the impressive nature and fill up your Instagram with fat snapshots.
Tugela FallsThe second-highest waterfall in the world, where the water plunges down almost 1,000 metres. Weeyooo...! The hike to it is not for wimps, especially if you include the infamous chain ladder route. But once you reach the top, you are treated to views that are well worth the effort.
Only for adrenaline junkiesThere is an activity centre near Montusi Mountain Lodge where you can go wild with ziplining, paintball and more geeky activities. Perfect for anyone who could really use an adrenaline shot.
Where is it fun to stay overnight?
Montusi Mountain LodgeThis lodge is about a 1.5-hour drive from Tugela Falls and is close to the Royal Natal National Park, for even more great hikes. Montusi offers serene surroundings, very nice views and delicious meals included with your stay. A great base to explore the different regions of the Drakensberg Mountains!
Central Drakensberg
Here you can do both fantastic hikes and relax with a delicious drink and a good plate of food in front of you. Whether you want to climb Cathedral Peak or enjoy culinary delights in Champagne Valley, the Central Drakensberg has everything you're looking for.

Cathedral Peak
Ready for a hiking adventure? Cathedral Peak offers you several trails. Whether you fancy a short, leisurely 2-hour hike or a 10-hour hike, there is something for every hiker. At the entrance, you can score a map with all routes-choose one that suits your mood and go with it. After a day of sweating on the trails, Didima Resort is the ideal place to chill out. Comfortable beds and killer views will ensure you're fully recharged for the next day.
Champagne Valley
A walhalla for foodies and a hub for cool activities in the area. Besides a glut of wine, beer, cheese and chocolate tastings, you'll find cosy cafés and even an ice cream parlour.
But it's not just about the food-this place is bursting with fun things to do, like rafting, bird shows, and ziplining. Whether you're a die-hard foodie or not into hiking at all, Champagne Valley offers enough variety to keep you busy for a while. It is the perfect spot to chill out and enjoy the good life. And as icing on the cake: it is near the entrance to Monk's Cowl!
Monk’s Cowl
Like Cathedral Peak, Monk's Cowl offers hikes for all levels. Highly recommended is the trail that takes you past Crystal Falls, up to Blind Man's Corner (where the views are really next level) and then back via Nandi Falls for a refreshing swim. This hike takes about 6 hours, so it's a top adventure if you're up for it.
If you have less time or fancy a lighter trek, there is also a shorter 30-minute hike that leads you to a beautiful waterfall. Monk's Cowl is a hidden gem with insane views, imposing cliffs and thundering waterfalls-a must-visit in the Drakensberg.

Rhino Peak Hike
Ready for a challenge? This 8-9-hour, 20-km trek also starts at Garden Castle Nature Reserve. The climb to Rhino Peak is tough, with steep sections and rugged terrain, but the breathtaking views from the top make it absolutely worth it.
Views on horseback

Where is it nice to stay overnight?
Khotso Lodge
On arrival at Khotso Lodge, it immediately feels like coming home. The team here is like family and makes you feel welcome from the start. After a day of wandering around the wilderness or horseback riding, you can enjoy hearty meals and a relaxed atmosphere here. It's a favourite at Charlie's Travels, thanks to the casual vibe and genuine warmth of the place. This is one of those lodges you just won't want to leave.
Other highlights: The Sani Pass
In the middle of the Southern Drakensberg, you'll find the Sani Pass, a must-do for any adventurer. This winding mountain road offers insane views as you climb the heights to ‘the gateway of Lesotho’. The hairpin bends and fat landscapes make this a bucket list trip for anyone who loves a cool road trip.
Self-driving in the Drakensberg Mountains: what you need to know
Exploring the Drakensberg Mountains with your own car is, of course, very special. Be prepared for winding mountain roads, spectacular views and the occasional wild animal crossing, so always stay alert and drive carefully. The condition of the roads changes, especially if you go to remote areas, so prepare accordingly. It is also smart to download maps offline, as coverage is weak in some places. Good preparation is half the battle!
Hiken in the Drakensberg: Tips & Tricks
Hiking in the Drakensberg Mountains is an experience you definitely don't want to miss. Start early to take advantage of the nice cool mornings and avoid afternoon storms (which are especially common in summer). Bring enough water and snacks for the road and wear good walking shoes and layers of clothing. Take a picture of the map at the entrance so you stay on the right path. If you are planning a more remote hike, let someone know which route you are taking and when you are expected back. And don't forget the sunscreen and/or a cap. The sun is much stronger here than in chilly Europe!
