Damaraland: A Highlight in Northern Namibia!
Discover Damaraland in Namibia, named after the Damara people who call this stunning region home. Explore the rich history and unique landscapes of this extraordinary place—it’s a destination you simply cannot miss. Here are our highlights!

Damaraland and Desert Elephants: Rich in Unique Wildlife
One of the standout experiences in Damaraland is the opportunity to see desert elephants. It’s already an awe-inspiring experience to see an elephant in the wild, but spotting a desert elephant adds an extra thrill. These elephants can survive without water for days and know exactly where to go to stay alive—a handy trait for a desert elephant!
The desert elephants here are actually regular bush elephants that have adapted to the harsh conditions of the Namib region. In the 18th century, it’s estimated there were between 2,500 and 3,500 elephants in this area. Sadly, this number drastically declined due to extensive hunting and poaching in the 19th century, down to about 600 elephants. By 1983, the population had dwindled to just 360 elephants due to war, drought, and conflicts with humans. Fortunately, there’s now a slow recovery underway. But still, it’s not guaranteed that you’ll spot them! So, if you’re lucky enough to see one of these rare desert elephants, it’s truly an unforgettable experience.
Rhino Spotting in Damaraland
Damaraland is also an excellent place for rhino tracking, and with a bit of luck, you can spot the rare black rhino. It’s incredibly impressive to see these giants roaming the rugged landscape.

Famous Spots in Damaraland: Brandberg, Twyfelfontein, and Spitzkoppe
The most famous places in Damaraland are Brandberg, Twyfelfontein, and Spitzkoppe, where enormous rocks seem to shoot up from the ground. The entire area is a highlight in itself and well worth a visit. This is not only due to the bizarre landscape but also because of the inhabitants (both human and animal) who manage to thrive in this extremely challenging environment.
Our Favourites: Brandberg and Spitzkoppe
Brandberg is the highest peak in Namibia, rising 2,573 metres above sea level. For the San people, this mountain has held sacred significance for centuries. In the Tsisab Gorge, at the foot of the Brandberg, you’ll find over 8,000 rock paintings, including the famous 'White Lady'. The Brandberg looks like a petrified sea of flames when bathed in the orange-red glow of sunrise or sunset… Hence the name!
Spitzkoppe
You can see this landmark from far off. It’s one of Namibia’s lesser-known destinations, but it’s absolutely stunning! The 700-metre granite peaks of Spitzkoppe rise dramatically from the flat landscape and are over 120 million years old. Some of the rocks have flat tops. Set up your tent here and sleep under the stars… Around 5 a.m., you’ll gradually be woken by the warmth of the rising sun.
It’s the perfect place to hike, climb, or simply enjoy the view. The vistas are breathtaking, and the hidden rock paintings make it even more special. If you can only visit one place in Damaraland, make it Spitzkoppe!
