A short travel story with bumpy roads and wings

With ten people we set off to the still undiscovered north of Malawi, ready for adventure. On the very first day a beautiful orange bird was walking around in the garden of our hotel, the Common Hoopoe. At that moment we discovered that, besides myself, there was another bird lover in our travel group. This soon turned out to be an unexpected recurring theme during the trip. With our 4x4s we rattled over roads that were either not finished yet or clearly had not seen a road worker in quite some time. Every drive was a free back massage, but nobody complained, we were on an expedition of discovery to the north. On the Nyika Plateau we hiked twenty two kilometres. Or actually, the first kilometres were mostly just walking. After a few hours the trek turned into a kind of shared survival mission where everyone kept encouraging each other. What a view, it really is time for a break. And, The camp really is behind that ridge. We wild camped, saw the beautiful starry sky and zebras with a foal walked right through our camp. It was rough, tough and stunning and we all felt like real pioneers. Throughout the hike we were followed by the rare White necked Raven, which more or less travelled along with us in the hope of a few food scraps. Een persoon met een fleecejack met patroon kijkt door een verrekijker naar buiten, met wazig groen en een bewolkte lucht op de achtergrond. After the hike we travelled to Likoma Island, in the middle of Lake Malawi, and it turned out to be a true bird paradise. The most beautiful African birds were just sitting in the bushes outside our bathroom window or on their favourite lookout post just off the shore, Malachite Kingfishers, the Little Egret pure white with yellow feet and the impressive African Fish Eagle. And everywhere those brilliant bright yellow weaver birds. The question whether we were looking at a Southern Masked Weaver or a Village Weaver led to hours of discussion and plenty of eye rolling from fellow travellers. There was also plenty to spot in the gardens of Mzuki Beach and in Nkhotakota safari park. The funny thing, the rest of the group slowly got hooked. Where at first it was just the two of us whispering excitedly, Look over there, before long our travel companions were standing half in the bushes peering around, asking if something was a Paradise Flycatcher, an African Green Pigeon or just a leaf. Een man in lichte kleding gebruikt een verrekijker terwijl hij buiten tussen groene bomen en planten staat. Een vrouw staat naast hem, gedeeltelijk verborgen door bladeren op de voorgrond. De scène is zonnig en weelderig. When we finally returned, dusty, tired but satisfied, the conclusion was clear, we came for adventure, action and beach vibes, but Malawi unexpectedly gave us a few new birders. Forever infected with a softly slumbering bird fever that will probably never completely go away. Een man glimlacht naar de camera terwijl hij een verrekijker vasthoudt in een weelderige, zonovergoten tuin. Een andere persoon staat op de achtergrond, gedeeltelijk zichtbaar tussen groene bomen en planten.

Endless travel inspiration
