The Whale Coast
Discover one of South Africa’s most breathtaking drives: the Whale Coast. Spot sharks, whales and penguins along this route. Visit Hermanus, Betty’s Bay and Gansbaai for wildlife and beach vibes, and discover hidden caves as you explore the rugged coastal route.

Something for everyone
Bettysbaai, Hermanus and Gansbaai are three fishing villages in the Overberg area. From Cape Town, Bettysbaai is the first village you will encounter after about 96 kilometres, followed by Hermanus and then Gansbaai. Another 125 kilometres further you will find the incredibly beautiful De Hoop Nature Reserve.
From Gordon’s Bay you drive via the Clarence Drive (R44) towards the penguin colony at Betty’s Bay. In the area around Cape Town we love to visit the penguins at Boulders Beach. Betty’s Bay is actually exactly that but without a fence and therefore without an entrance fee. Here the penguins still live peacefully and in peace. Our advice: stop here for a small bite but then go explore the Whale Coast Route again. The hundreds of penguins are the highlight of this village. The Clarence Drive continues for a short while, approximately to the Hottentots-Holland Nature Reserve. What a name huh.. In this area you can make a few hikes or go in search of the hidden natural pools. At Dappe Se Gat you have to slow down a bit, here you will find a hidden cave that can only be reached via the beach when the tide is out, beautiful picture!

Marine wildlife
Step on the pedal again because you still have a long way to go. Gansbaai is one of those villages that you wouldn’t normally visit at first glance, but real daredevils take note. This isn’t just any place, this is the Great White Shark capital of South Africa. You can probably guess what you can do here. For some it’s a deep-rooted dream, for others it’s a downright nightmare: Shark Cage Diving. However, many people don’t know that these enormous fish are endangered animals. It’s therefore good to be careful with the animals: not all providers of ‘cage diving’ are equally strict about the strict rules. That’s why we work exclusively with Marine Dynamics, who work exclusively in an ecological way.
Okay, we’ve now been able to cross off the penguins and sharks. But what the Whale Coast Route is really known for is the big friendly giant in the water, the whale. Welcome to Hermanus. A village that started out as a small fishing village and has now expanded into one of the world’s top-notch whale spots. These insanely cool animals can be spotted in the village from June to November. Where in Gansbaai the black flag is raised when there are sharks in the water, the well-known whale crier blows the whole town down as soon as a whale can be seen along the coast. Jump on that boat and go whale watching, cool! Here you can read a bit more about the area and what there is to do.
The Hoop Nature Reserve
But these places are known all over the world.. Not so strange we think, because these activities are of course a once in a lifetime experience. As cool as this is, we still have a slight preference for another area that actually has almost everything. De Hoop Nature Reserve. A place for the real nature lover among us! Beautiful sandy beaches and an extensive dune area!
The reserve was founded from two farms and is intended to give endangered species breathing space again. Here you will find dolphins, seals, southern whales and more than 250 species of fish in the water, wow! Everyone knows Hermanus as the whale paradise, but if you have a little more time we recommend you to drive to De Hoop Nature Reserve. Because this is a whale paradise! Check more about this park here and see which other wild animals hop around.
