Swazi Candle Factory

Visit the factory where around 200 artisans handcraft the world-famous Swazi candles in all shapes and sizes.

Candles for every occasion

Once started in an old cowshed, this candle-making workshop has grown into a thriving business renowned for its beautifully crafted candles. Visitors travel from far and wide to buy these unique candles, making it a must-do on any trip to Swaziland.

Today, more than 200 local artisans work to meet the high demand for their special candles. They don’t just make candles but also organic soy tea lights and candles with built-in LED lights. You can even find skincare products here, with a wide range of balms and soaps available. The candles are so beautifully made that you might find it almost too nice to burn them. But don’t worry—this candle workshop also supplies the Wereldwinkel, so when yours runs out, you can simply get a new one back in the Netherlands!

But what you can't do in the Netherlands is learn how these candles are made. So, take the opportunity to explore the workshop and see firsthand how these stunning candles are crafted using a special technique. They employ the millefiore, or "thousand flowers" technique—an ancient method originating from Alexandria, later perfected in Italy.

This technique ensures that the outer layer of the candle remains hard and barely melts, giving it a rich, romantic glow while the inner wax burns down. Once the candle is used up, the outer shell remains intact and can even be reused with a tea light inside. Super handy, as these candles are so beautiful, you’ll want to keep them! Will you choose one with an animal print, or are you more drawn to the vibrant patterns? There's plenty to choose from!
