Swakopmund
After days in the middle of nowhere, Swakopmund is a breath of fresh air. Here, you’ll find a quirky mix of German and Namibian influences. The colonial buildings, extreme sports, and cool sea breeze make this a unique destination. Time to unwind in a cosy little bar.

About Swakopmund
The word "surreal" has been used several times to describe Namibia, and Swakopmund proves this once again! In a single glance, you can see beautifully untouched, bright orange desert plains, from which a picturesque, romantic German village suddenly emerges, only to be bordered by pristine white beaches and a vivid blue sea. Yes, it's truly bizarre!
Founded in 1892 as the main harbour for German South West Africa, Swakopmund is often described as more German than Germany itself. As a seaside resort, Swakopmund is the capital of the Skeleton Coast. The quirky mix of German and Namibian influences, colonial buildings, and the cool sea breeze makes it a popular holiday destination.

By land, by sea, and in the air
But enough about the village of Swakopmund, it’s not that amazing. The real reason you’ll want to stick around for a few days are the incredible activities on offer. Whether you're exploring the dunes and surrounding areas by land, heading out to sea to spot marine wildlife, or taking to the skies for an adrenaline rush, you'll definitely get your fill of action here!

Activities on land
1. Swakopmund city tour
A true mix of cultures can be experienced during the Swakopmund City Tour. You’ll explore the colourful history of Swakopmund with a walk through a township just outside the town. You’ll chat with the locals and gain insight into their daily lives. But before you can understand everyday life, you’ll first need to learn more about the history and future of this unique seaside town. During the City Tour, you’ll discover all this and more.
2. Spot de Little Five
It’s hard to imagine that small creatures still live here, and that it’s not just sand grains. The guide carries a small box of worms in his pocket to lure 'wild' animals. On hands and knees, you crawl through the sand as the guide slowly sweeps away layer after layer, hoping to find a creature. Each animal has its own way of surviving in the desert, and this experience will help you discover how!
Curious about what you can spot in the bone-dry desert? Check this page for more information about the Little Five.
3. Quad biking
No time for talking, it’s all action today: you’re heading into the dunes on, yes, quad bikes! You can look out endlessly across the dunes of Swakopmund, a truly unique sight.
4. Horseback riding through Swakopmund
Not into quad biking? Then feel like a real Lucky Luke as you trot through the dunes or desert of Swakopmund on horseback.
Activities at sea
1. Ocean safari
Today, you’ll head out on a catamaran in search of the Big 5 of the Namibian Ocean: whales, dolphins, Mola mola, turtles, and seals! You’ll sail towards the home of around 50,000 seals! From the boat, you’ll definitely spot seals, but dolphins and whales are also commonly seen here!
2. Kayaking with seals!
You’ll paddle through the remote Pelican Point Peninsula, home to around 50,000 seals! On the way there, you'll pass one of the largest salt mines in the world and the Walvis Bay wetlands, where you’ll often spot unique birds like pelicans and flamingos.
By land, by sea, and even in the air, you can admire the unique and surreal landscapes of Namibia.

Activities in the air
1. Skydiving
Yes, you’ve got to be brave—it’s not for everyone to willingly jump out of a plane. But after those first few seconds of free-fall fear, you’ll experience nothing but a massive adrenaline rush and a heavenly feeling, all while enjoying the beautiful views. Go for it!
2. Scenic Flights
Prefer to stay in the plane but still want those epic views? No worries, it’s all possible. By land, by sea, and even in the air, you can admire Namibia's unique and surreal landscapes. It’ll cost you a bit, but it’s worth every penny! Without a doubt, a once in a lifetime experience and a bucket-list must. And let's be honest, drone shots are always the most breathtaking, so spending 30 minutes with the drone is guaranteed to be absolutely stunning.
