Rukinga Conservancy
Rukinga Conservancy, an adventure paradise nestled between the much more famous Tsavo East and Tsavo West National Parks. Spanning 74,000 hectares filled with elephants, cheetahs, lions, and even wild dogs, this is the perfect place for a magical safari, made even more special by the iconic red earth.

Why a conservancy?
At Charlie's Travels, we absolutely love conservancies. Not only are the prices in conservancies often lower than in national parks, but they also offer many more opportunities. Here, you can enjoy not just game drives, but also walking safaris, bush breakfasts, and night game drives—which actually take place in the evening, so you won’t have to get out of bed in the middle of the night. Adventure guaranteed!
In the footsteps of the British soldiers
What makes the Rukinga Conservancy so special? Due to its rugged terrain, Rukinga was used by the British during World War II as a base to train their soldiers. The landscape and climate were similar to the deserts of North Africa, where the British were heavily involved at the time.
The region was also used for logistical purposes, such as setting up supply posts, communication centres, and medical stations for the troops in training.
This strong British presence in the mid-20th century is still evident today in Rukinga. You can find an old airstrip, along with several bunkers and other military infrastructure, making this stunning conservancy not just a wildlife haven but also a living history lesson. Definitely not to be missed!

Walk among the wildlife of Rukinga
You begin early in the morning with a walk through the conservancy, accompanied by an experienced ranger. The mix of savannah, trees, and waterholes makes it the perfect spot to spot wildlife. With an armed ranger by your side, you’ll feel safe, as they ensure you maintain a safe distance from the wildlife around you. After a 1.5-hour walk, it's time for breakfast in the heart of the bush.
For the rest of the day, you can explore the park by self-drive or with a driver/guide. In the evening, you’ll embark on an adventure in the dark, armed with a torch, in search of cheetahs and lions.
Enjoy game drives, walking safaris, and nocturnal outings in the Rukinga Conservancy while contributing to conservation efforts and supporting the local community. The conservancy, located between Tsavo West and Tsavo East, is teeming with wildlife, including elephants, cheetahs, and lions. Camp among the wildlife and experience the ultimate safari. Combine Rukinga with Taita Hills, Tsavo, or the tropical coast for an unforgettable journey.
Nature and wildlife first
A visit to a conservancy contributes to wildlife conservation and animal protection. Rukinga has a dedicated team working to combat poaching and focusing on alternative income sources for the local community. Tourism plays a significant role in this, helping preserve cultural heritage and providing sustainable income for the conservancy. Rukinga has been awarded gold status by the Climate Community Biodiversity Alliance for its exceptional benefits to the community and biodiversity, resulting from various projects.
Our favourite accommodation
Ndovu House, in the heart of Rukinga, offers a cosy stay with natural materials and a fantastic view from the veranda. If your budget is a bit tighter, you can pitch your own tent or stay in the dorm. For a bit more luxury, en-suite rooms are available.
You’ll cook your own meals in the well-equipped kitchen and dine by the campfire, right in the middle of the bush. The fence surrounding the accommodation ensures you don’t have to worry about elephants, giraffes, or other wildlife, although you can still spot them from the comfort of your chair.
Are you a true nature and animal lover? Then Rukinga is your dream destination. Combine Rukinga with the always-green Taita Hills, a fun hike to the top of Mount Kasigau, the larger Tsavo parks, or travel towards the tropical coast. However you travel, Rukinga is a must-see!
