Roundtrip Weskus

The Cape West Coast is raw and unspoiled. No trendy beach bars, just quiet beaches, unique accommodations, and laid-back locals. Enjoy picnic tables with stunning views, South African snacks, and pure relaxation. It doesn't get more local or better than this!

West Coast, or the Weskus for the locals

From Cape Town, you drive along one long, straight road towards the Northern Cape, which eventually stops at Lamberts Bay after about two hours. It’s a nice escape from the hustle and bustle of the city!

Along this entire coastline, you’ll find a series of picturesque historical towns and charming fishing villages. On the way, you'll pass through villages like Darling, Goedverwacht, Paternoster, and Langebaan. In Paternoster, you’ll sleep in white cottages that remind you of Greece, and Darling is filled with wineries, breweries, and gin distilleries where you can taste the flavour of the West Coast.

The West Coast is great to visit year-round, though there are differences in the seasons. The South African winter lasts from June to September, which is the opposite of the Dutch winter. During the winter months, you can enjoy the wildflowers and Cape fynbos along the way. In the summer (from November to May), you can stop everywhere for a swim in the water and take walks along the beach.

From the car, you’ll see fertile valleys, white dunes, and all of it in complete peace on the road. Doesn’t sound too bad, right?! If you drive a bit further up towards Namibia, you’ll find more of these colourful flower fields. Find out more about the Northern Cape here.

West Coast National Park

After about an hour’s drive, you’ll arrive at the first gem of the West Coast: West Coast National Park. When you think of a nature park in South Africa, you might immediately think of the Big Five, but unfortunately, you won’t spot those here. But don’t worry, there’s no shortage of animals. Upon arrival, you’ll get a checklist of all the animals you can find here. Flamingos, zebras, antelopes, and ostriches – how cool is that?!

The park has several spots where you can have a braai (South African BBQ) and plenty of small, secluded beaches where you can hop around freely. You might be wondering: braai? It’s an authentic South African barbecue, a bit different from what we’re used to in the Netherlands. While we’re used to grilling on ready-made charcoal, South Africans do it over wood and wait until it turns into coals.

It’s all about slow food; you take your time with your meal! South Africans love big cuts of meat on the braai that cook slowly, and it’s all about enjoying the moment together. Isn’t that South African food culture just wonderful? It’ll make you want to lick your fingers!

When do we go?

This park is actually great to visit year-round. In the African summer, it's perfect for a day of sunbathing by the azure blue lagoon of the Atlantic Ocean. Kite surfers, at heart, will love it here!

Not really your thing? On the edge of West Coast National Park lies the Langebaan Lagoon, an idyllic paradise of white sandy beaches and turquoise waters. Thanks to the side winds, it’s ideal for kayaking, surfing, snorkelling, and pretty much anything you can think of. With the crystal-clear water and white beaches, you'll almost feel like you’re in the Caribbean.

In the South African winter, you’re in for a treat. While you won’t be swimming, you can enjoy the colourful floral blanket in the park. It’s truly a picture, contrasting beautifully with the azure-blue lagoon. Especially in July and August, the park is awash with pink, red, blue, yellow, and orange. During this time, you also have the best chance to wave at whales from the beach!

Atlantis Dunes

Ready for some adventure? Then head to the Atlantis Dunes for sandboarding or quad biking. This desert offers stunning views of Table Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean. The sand is so white that it feels like you’re sliding down an Austrian slope on your snowboard when you’re sandboarding. At the gate, you’ll be met with a cool 4×4 truck. Hop in the back and hold on tight to the bars, because this ride is going to be intense. You’ll race through the desert and be dropped off at the top of the dune with your sandboard.

Not into sandboarding? Then the quad bike tour is probably more your speed! It lasts about an hour, and you’ll ride through the desert with the guide. The hills can be steep and challenging, especially for the real daredevils. Or, you could seize this moment to push your limits!

The taste of Weskus

South Africa is renowned for its delicious culinary treats, and the West Coast showcases this rich food culture in its own unique way. It’s all about fish here! Dried, steamed, fried, grilled, or on the braai – you’ll find it all along the West Coast! For anyone already salivating, this coastline is truly a food lover’s paradise when it comes to seafood.

A local delicacy: Bokkom, or dried herring. In Veldriff, three generations of fishermen are still hard at work every day, catching fish and drying it into bokkom. You can try this local, authentic snack at various restaurants. While you're in Veldriff, take a boat trip along the Bergriver – you’ll spot pink and white flamingos along the banks.

The Strandloper! As mentioned before, the charm of the West Coast lies in its authentic style and relaxed beach vibe. Our favourite afternoon activity is a ten-course fish braai on the beach. Kick off your shoes, ask the resident guitarist Johnny to play your favourite tune, and enjoy a drink from the beach bar, decorated with ocean trash. You’re also welcome to bring your own drinks because it’s that easy! The fish is cleaned, and the barbecue slowly starts to sizzle. Forget polished cutlery – you’ll eat your fish with a mussel shell while seagulls snatch up the scraps. This is authentic enjoyment at its finest!

Paternoster

This little fishing village truly tops the list when it comes to culinary delights. When you arrive and see the fairytale-like white houses with blue doors and window frames, you might wonder if you’ve accidentally stepped off the plane in Greece. In this village, you can enjoy a real Mediterranean vibe – sun, beach, and endless seafood restaurants. Paternoster is close to Cape Columbine Nature Reserve, where you can enjoy beautiful walks, but the absolute best and most delicious activity here is eating fish.

Be sure to visit The Noisy Oyster (what’s in a name) for the best oysters on the whole cape! But it gets even better: in 2019, Wolfgat was named the best restaurant in South Africa. Wolfgat is so unique that you have to book at least three months in advance. Make sure you have your plans sorted out early, so you don’t miss out!

Waking up to the sound of the sea, blissful!

After such a wonderful day, the accommodation has to be something special too. A small boat takes you from Kraalbaai beach in West Coast National Park to an overnight stay that is truly unique: a boathouse right in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean lagoon. Once the boat leaves, you're free to enjoy this stunning park in peace. Fire up the braai, take a dip in the water, and pop open a bottle of South African wine. Can you picture it? Pure bliss!

Back to basics: Sea Shack. This eco-friendly, off-the-beaten-path accommodation is simple but has all the essentials. The minimalist cabins sit right by the sea, so you'll wake up to the soothing sound of the waves. Perfect! Of course, this isn’t the only unique overnight experience we offer here.

A favourite of the Capetonians: Cape Columbine Lighthouse. Yes, you read that correctly: you can actually stay in a lighthouse. Just a ten-minute drive from Paternoster, you’ll find yourself in tranquil surroundings. Built in 1936, this lighthouse is still in great condition. Climb up the stairs and you'll be treated to breathtaking views over Britannia Reef. The beach is quiet, with only a few people walking around, while the Atlantic Ocean gently laps at the bay.
