Pilanesberg National Park
Pilanesberg, the fourth largest park in South Africa, is just a 3-hour drive from Johannesburg. With a bit of luck on your side, you might spot the Big Five here before heading to the somewhat busier Kruger Park.

An abundance of wildlife
Spot the Big Five even before you’ve unpacked your binoculars. Pilanesberg is the first stop on your route to places like Kruger Park or Botswana. Pilanesberg is teeming with wildlife. It’s only about a three-hour drive from Johannesburg, and you’ll find yourself right in the middle of it all. What a difference! Another advantage: this area is malaria-free, less discovered, and thus more off the beaten track. Off you go!

Sleeping volcano: Pilanesberg National Park
The National Park is located in the South African province of ‘the North West’ and surrounds the 1.7-kilometre-high Pilanesberg. The Pilanesberg is a dormant volcano. The volcano was active millions of years ago, so there’s no need to worry about it! However, the volcanic soil in this area has led to high ecological diversity. In addition to looking out for wild animals in all shapes, sizes and colours, you'll truly enjoy the surroundings. You can cruise through the park in your own vehicle or go on a safari with a ranger. The advantage of the latter option is that you’ll have someone with you who is out searching for the Big Five every day and often knows exactly where the majestic animals are hiding.

Mankwe Dam
In Pilanesberg, you'll find the Mankwe Dam region, which is home to the largest natural water pool in the entire park. This makes it the perfect spot for animals such as wildebeests, zebras, impalas, and elephants to come and quench their thirst. It's a place where you can easily stand on the lookout for an hour and never get bored... You'll be completely captivated by the sights!
Sleeping in the middle of the park
It's lovely to spend two nights in this park. This way, you have enough time to explore the park and still relax before the rest of your journey. You can choose the type of accommodation that appeals to you the most; from luxury lodges to beautiful camping spots in the bush.
