Mengya village tour

Nestled in the lush hills at the foot of Mount Elgon lies Mengya Village, a place where time seems to stand still. Mengya isn’t just a village; it’s a journey through the history and culture of this region, guided by locals like Cephus, who share their stories with pride and humour.

A Journey Through Untold Stories and Untamed Nature

The day begins at the cosy House of Friends lodge, a charming accommodation with a small souvenir shop, serving as the perfect starting point for this adventure. Here, you’ll meet your guide, Cephus – a friendly and knowledgeable local who has an instinct for when to share a story and when to let the beauty of nature speak for itself. An ideal companion for this fascinating journey!

On the Motorbike to Mengya Village

From here, we hop on motorbikes for an hour-long ride through the hills. The pace? Let’s call it slow travel, giving us plenty of time to soak in the scenery: endless green hills, crisp mountain air, and the faint sounds of wildlife hidden in the forest. Arriving in Mengya, we enjoy a simple but delicious lunch on the football field of the local school.

Cephus shares stories about the people of Mengya, often referred to as “The Forgotten People of the Forest.” They once lived deep within Mount Elgon’s forests, but the government relocated them to their current land. What was meant to be temporary became permanent.

Nature’s Secrets

During our walk, Cephus introduces us to the natural wonders of Mengya. He picks a leaf from a plant and passes it around with a wink: “Mountain toilet paper,” he jokes, “but don’t confuse it with nettles!” — A mistake we can vividly imagine. Further along, he shows us Chamboywet, a herb used to lower cholesterol and improve eyesight. Here, every plant has a purpose, a story to tell, and a connection to the people who live alongside it.

The River That Never Dries

We pass by the Chabiaganyet, or “The River That Never Dries.” Even in the harshest dry seasons, this water flows steadily. The name, meaning “Let the name stand,” is a playful nod to the villagers who couldn’t agree on what to call it. The river breathes life into the area, a stark contrast to the stillness found elsewhere.

Mukuuso Cave: A Place of History and Rituals

Our final stop is the Mukuuso Cave, a site steeped in history and tradition. Once a refuge for the local community, the cave became a scene of tragedy when the Nandi tribe laid siege to it. Many perished when the cave was set ablaze, and its exit blocked. The original name was lost, replaced by Mukuuso, meaning “perished.”

Today, the cave holds spiritual significance for the community. It serves as a site for rituals such as child-naming ceremonies and other traditional practices. Standing in the shadow of the cave, you can feel its deep resonance — both as a historical landmark and a sacred space for the people of Mengya.
