The land of the great thirst

The Karoo literally means ‘the land of the great thirst’ in the language of the indigenous population of Khonia. The words ‘the great thirst’ already give it away: it is a dry area. A truly unique South African semi-desert landscape with special mountains and historical sites. The area covers almost a third of South Africa!

The area is divided into the Little and Great Karoo and together they stretch across the interior of the Eastern Cape to the Indian Ocean. The Little Karoo lies further west, between the Swartberg, the Langeberg and Outeniqua ranges. This area is somewhat greener than the Great Karoo, which lies further north and where there is less rain. In September it also rains in the Great Karoo and the area changes into a large fertile sea of flowers. Would you like to know more about the rugged areas in the Great Karoo? Then take a look at this page for more information and tips for this area.

The Karoo is known for its extreme weather conditions: temperatures are very high in the South African summer (December and January), it can be around 45 degrees. While it can freeze and snow in June and July…

The Ostrich Capital

Little Karoo has an ostrich capital – Oudtshoorn. You may know it, one of the most famous stops along the Garden Route. Oudtshoorn became rich by breeding a special flightless bird, the ostrich.

But why exactly ostriches? This bird has incredibly beautiful feathers, these feathers were in fashion worldwide in the nineteenth century. As you have read, the Karoo is extremely dry, despite this driest the soil is very fertile. This is also the only place in South Africa where the food of the ostrich grows: alfalfa. Oudtshoorn made clever and eager use of this, they became filthy rich in a short time. The ostrich farmers also showed off a lot, they built real feather palaces for themselves. On some farms the houses from this period can still be seen, these are richly decorated houses, also called feather palaces. The ostrich fashion is already on its way out, so Oudtshoorn mainly exports ostrich meat, eggs and leather.

For all vegetarians, scroll down to the next paragraph. The meat of the ostrich is so tender that you hardly need a knife to get through it, this juicy piece of steak is therefore very popular with locals and meat lovers all over the world. Must try if you are staying in Oudtshoorn.

Route 62

That sounds so good, like you're road tripping in America, but a bit better. Route 62 is an insanely beautiful mountain route that starts in Montagu and officially ends in the Baviaanskloof. However, we keep Oudtshoorn as our final destination, because the part of the route between Montagu and Oudtshoorn is the most spectacular. Everywhere you look you are surrounded by mountain ranges and endless views.

There are a few funny stops along the way, such as Ronnie's Sex Shop, where you can leave your bra in the bar and it will be hung from the ceiling. Or drink a milkshake at Diesel & Crème in Barrydale, this is the transition area between two South African extremes. On the one hand a fertile valley, on the other the dry desert-like landscape. Jump in your car and stroll along the beautiful spots of Route 62.

The impressive starry sky from your private fly camp

In the beautiful area, surrounded by mountains, lies your accommodation for tonight: your private Fly Camp on an ostrich farm. This remote farm is managed by a German woman who came to South Africa years ago (on a cargo ship!).

It will be a special night, because you will sleep in the open air under a curtain of stars. To get to the sleeping place, you first have to walk a bit. At the end of the afternoon you walk from the farm into the semi-desert landscape. Just before and during sunset, the view is the most beautiful.
