Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park
Kgalagadi is a transboundary park, spanning across South Africa, Namibia, and Botswana! It’s vast, and you can literally drive for hours without encountering a soul. Here, you’ll find lions, leopards, giraffes, steenboks, hyenas, eagles, and countless other wildlife species.

The Kalahari Desert
Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park stretches across the Kalahari Desert, covering parts of South Africa, Namibia, and Botswana! The park is immense. Not only do the desert plains stretch for miles, but the starry sky here also seems endless!
As for wildlife, the park is home to an array of predators: spotting the rugged Kalahari lions (with their black manes) is an absolute must! Other remarkable animals you can spot here include the fearless honey badgers, curious meerkats, and graceful cheetahs.
Staying in the Park
There are only a handful of lodges and campsites in this park, which only adds to the sense of being ‘alone in the world.’ This also means that a trip to the Kalahari needs careful planning: the bush campsites are often booked up months in advance.
The Climate
The climate is an important factor to consider in this area: the park is mostly made up of sandy roads, so travelling in the dry season (and with a robust 4x4 vehicle) is recommended. Additionally, it can get extremely hot during the peak of summer, so it’s best to plan your trip during the African winter for a more comfortable safari.
Films & Books
A must-see before visiting the Kalahari: the cult film The Gods Must Be Crazy. This heartwarming film offers an insightful look into the gentle Bushmen, who settled in the Kalahari centuries ago after being driven out of the Cape by colonists and violent tribes.
If you’re more interested in Kalahari wildlife, read Cry of the Kalahari by Mark & Delia Owens. This book is proof that biological research is anything but dull! The couple lived under harsh conditions in the heart of the Kalahari for years, conducting research on the unique animals of the region.
Meer geïnteresseerd in Kalahari wildlife? Lees ‘Cry of the Kalahari’ van Mark & Delia Owens. Dit boek is het levende bewijs dat biologisch onderzoek alles behalve saai is! Jaren woonde het stel onder erbarmelijke omstandigheden in het hart van de Kalahari en deden onderzoek naar de unieke dieren van dit gebied.
