Nairobi

Kenya’s capital city is a wild mix of chaos, energy and charm, with wildlife just around the corner and one of the coolest city parks in Africa. This is our hometown Nairobi.

A skyline filled with zebras and giraffes

Nairobi is Kenya’s capital and unlike any other city in the world. Where most capitals have endless skylines full of towers, Nairobi’s turns into a savanna with wild animals roaming free. Start your day with coffee in one of the city’s trendy neighborhoods, explore the lively CBD in the afternoon and end the day watching lions at Nairobi National Park. Hard to beat that.

This city surprises most travelers, so give yourself time to explore. With over four million people, a rich history, cultural hotspots and its role as East Africa’s tech hub, there’s something here for everyone.

Things to do around Nairobi

In a city of millions, there’s plenty to experience. Here are some of our favorite Charlie’s Travels experiences.

Nai Nami city tour

What better way to get to know Nairobi than through the eyes of locals? The Nai Nami boys are former street kids who grew up in Mathare, one of Nairobi’s biggest slums. Together with them, sometimes on boda rides, you’ll spend about two hours exploring the CBD. They’ll tell you stories about their childhood, wild encounters and the hidden spots you’d never find on your own. Don’t worry, with these guys you’ll walk safely through the city’s busiest streets.

Tuktuk pubcrawl or party matatu

Nairobi isn’t just about culture, it’s got a serious party side too. Join a pub crawl or hop on the legendary party matatu to experience the city’s nightlife the local way. Guided by locals, you’ll visit a mix of African and Western bars, drop by a brewery and if you’re up for it, try some local nyama choma barbecue.

Move Up Foundation

If you want to see the real Nairobi, join us on a visit to Mathare, one of the city’s largest informal settlements. Together with local guides you’ll walk through the neighborhood for about three hours, visit the community center run by the Move Up Foundation, meet local artisans and share a simple local lunch. It’s the best way to understand what life is like beyond Nairobi’s trendy center.

Toi Market

Your favorite village flea market but at least ten times bigger. Whatever you’re looking for, you’ll find it at Toi Market. Forgot to pack those zip-off safari pants? You’ll definitely score a pair here. It’s the perfect place to test your bargaining skills or grab some last-minute souvenirs before heading home.
