Greater Kruger
In Greater Kruger, you’ll be completely spoiled and head off on an adventure with a ranger into the dense bush. No paved roads, no self-drives. For a few days, you’ll soak up the calm and take in the unique flora and fauna.

Kruger or Greater Kruger?
We all know the famous Kruger National Park, but there’s often some confusion about it. The key difference lies between Kruger National Park itself and the surrounding private game reserves (Greater Kruger).
Kruger National Park is state-owned. It’s the largest and oldest of the 21 national parks in South Africa, managed by South African National Parks (SANParks). A hallmark of SANParks reserves is that you can easily drive through them with your own car. There are paved roads everywhere and plenty of accommodation options/campsites where you can stay. These accommodations, run by SANParks, have a rustic vibe. It’s a perfect budget-friendly option, as you’re right in the park and can explore at your own pace.
If you’re after a more luxurious safari experience, you’ll find that in Greater Kruger. Greater Kruger is the collective name for all the private game reserves to the west of Kruger National Park, which together make up the APNR (Associated Private Nature Reserves). These are unfenced protected wildlife areas that border Kruger National Park.

A typical Greater Kruger experience
The real safari experience, in our opinion, is found in the surrounding private game reserves, also known as Greater Kruger. These reserves are connected to the main Kruger National Park, meaning you’ll see plenty of wildlife. In these parks, you often aren’t allowed to drive yourself, and there are no paved roads. Twice a day, you’ll head into the dense wilderness with a ranger who knows exactly where the animals like to hang out, thanks to the relatively small size of most conservancies. These rangers are also experts in the area’s flora and fauna, so don’t hesitate to ask them all your questions!
During a safari in a private game reserve, you’ll be pampered day and night. Before the morning safari, there’s a delicious coffee waiting for you, and when you return, you’re greeted with a hearty breakfast. Take a refreshing dip in the pool and get ready for the evening safari. On the evening drive, you’ll stop at a scenic viewpoint to enjoy a tasty snack. Don’t worry – the ranger will ensure it’s safe to step out of the vehicle. At night, you’ll fall asleep to the sounds of wild animals around your tent. Pure bliss, right?
This experience is in a different price range compared to a visit to Kruger National Park, but it’s absolutely worth every penny. While Kruger National Park often involves self-catering accommodation without activities, here all meals are included, and you’ll go on two guided game drives each day. Ask your travel consultant for advice – there are even different price ranges within Greater Kruger to suit your preferences.
