Discover the rugged Etosha National Park in Namibia
In Namibia’s breathtaking, rugged landscape lies a true safari gem—Etosha National Park. This vast park spans around 22,000 square kilometres and is the ultimate destination for spotting unique wildlife, exploring spectacular landscapes, enjoying stunning sunsets, and fully immersing yourself in the African safari vibes.

Wildlife: The Best of Africa
Etosha National Park is one of Namibia's most iconic wildlife parks. Covering over 20,000 square kilometres, this park serves as home to more than 114 mammals, 100 reptiles and 350 bird species. We drove into the park and within five minutes were face-to-face with a group of elephants. The open, treeless landscape allows you to see for miles, the perfect safari conditions!
Scattered through the park are several waterholes, the place to spot large concentrations of game during the dry season: lions, elephants, leopards, rhinos and buffalo, but cheetahs, giraffes, zebras and springboks also like to show off here. Cheetahs seek coolness under bushes, giraffes roam in the distance, and in the wet season the Etosha Pan turns pink with flamingos.
Because Etosha National Park is so packed with animals, it's a Predator's Paradise! The chances of encountering lions are very high, but leopards and cheetah encounters also lurk. And for the bird nerds: the Kori bustard and all sorts of birds of prey make spotting here a feast. Are you gamedriving here? Then don't give up and stay focused!
The Etosha Pan: the heart of the Park
In the middle of the park lies a massive salt plain, the Etosha Pan. This plain stretches for thousands of kilometres. During the dry season, you can peer endlessly far into “nothingness”. This makes the landscape seem hugely surreal.
Etosha means “the great white place” and gets its name from the huge dried-up, moon-like-looking lake: the Etosha Salt Pan. A must-see! This white clay is used by elephants as “Mzungu Protection Cream” (aka sunburn). They completely cover themselves with this stuff, turning them into white-armoured giants. Extraordinary, because you only see this in Etosha!
Once the rainy season starts, this plain turns into a shallow lake, attracting thousands of flamingos and other bird species. Because the contract between the dry and wet seasons is so great here, photographers love this place. So if you go here, cameras at the ready!
The Perfect Place for a Self-Drive Safari
What makes Etosha so special is that it’s the perfect destination for a self-drive safari. Rent a rugged 4x4 and set off on your adventure. The park’s roads and routes are well-marked, so there’s no need to worry about getting lost. Cruise through at your own pace and stop whenever you like.
What will you find around the next bend? Maybe a herd of elephants gathering at a waterhole for a drink, or perhaps a leopard stretching lazily in the treetops. What a feeling of freedom!
Sundowners: The Perfect African Evening
A big part of Etosha’s magic is undoubtedly its sunsets. As the sun slowly dips below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of red, orange, and purple, you can unwind with a refreshing drink and reminisce about the day’s adventures.
Comfortable Accommodation
Whether you prefer camping in the wild or staying in a comfortable lodge, Etosha has it all. Campsites like Halali and Okaukuejo let you immerse yourself in nature, while lodges like Onguma offer more luxurious options. Enjoy a bush breakfast at sunrise or a dinner under the stars while listening to the sounds of the African night.
When is the Best Time to Visit Etosha?
You can visit Etosha year-round, but the best time for wildlife spotting is during the dry season (May to October). During this period, animals gather around the park’s waterholes, making it easier to see a variety of species. In the rainy season (November to April), the park transforms into a lush green paradise, attracting migratory birds to the water-filled Etosha Pan. While wildlife can be harder to spot due to the dense vegetation, this season offers a completely different—yet equally spectacular—view of Etosha.
