De Hoop Nature reserve
A haven for true nature enthusiasts! Picture stunning sandy beaches, vast dunes, and a sanctuary designed to give endangered species the space to thrive.

A Pristine Coastline
De Hoop Nature Reserve spans an impressive 36,000 hectares, boasting an unspoilt coastline stretching over 70 kilometres. Its rich biodiversity and unique characteristics have earned it a spot on the UNESCO World Heritage list. It is also one of the largest natural areas managed by CapeNature. Alongside its UNESCO status, the 19-kilometre-long valley is recognised on the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance.

Garden and Whale Routes
This extraordinary reserve is located roughly 260 kilometres or a three-hour drive from Cape Town, along the famous Garden and Whale Routes. You’ll find De Hoop Reserve to the east of Bredasdorp, making it most accessible from either Bredasdorp or Swellendam. This region is often referred to as the Overberg.

Safeguarded from Human Impact
The reserve was created by merging two farms, with the aim of providing a safe haven for endangered species like the Bontebok and Cape Mountain Zebra, allowing them to graze freely and without worry. The park is also carefully protected from the impact of human activity. Visitors are prohibited from taking anything – even that beautiful pebble or shiny shell must stay where it belongs!
The Marine Protected Area (MPA) surrounding De Hoop extends its protection beyond the coastline. It safeguards dolphins, seals, southern right whales, and over 250 species of fish, all within a three-nautical-mile radius of the reserve.
A Whale Paradise
De Hoop is a paradise for nature lovers! Behind the sandy beaches and rugged rocks lies an expansive dune area, and further inland, a large freshwater lake offers the perfect setting for a scenic nature walk. Numerous whale families make this bay their holiday destination, making it a prime spot for whale watching.
De Hoop Nature Reserve is also an excellent addition to a trip to the southernmost tip of Africa!
