The Fish River Canyon
Meet the Fish River Canyon – the smaller sibling of the Grand Canyon in the USA. The Fish River Canyon is the third largest canyon in the world, but far less crowded with tourists. Located in the far south of Namibia, it is near the Orange River, which is also definitely worth a visit. Check out the page for the Orange River here.

Activities around Fish River Canyon
Although simply visiting the Fish River Canyon and taking in the breathtaking views from one of the lookout points is an incredible experience, there is plenty more to do in the surrounding area. Below is a small selection of activities you can enjoy around the canyon.
1. Enjoy a sundowner and spot the Fish Eagle
The sundowner is a true tradition in Southern Africa. As the sun sets, the moon rises, and the first stars appear, there's nothing better than unwinding with a well-earned cold drink to round off the day. This is ultimate relaxation after an intense day. Set off with a guide through the stunning landscapes of vast open plains. A chance to take a break from driving and fully immerse yourself in nature. If you’re lucky, you might even spot the impressive African Fish Eagle!

2. Guided hiking trail
Hiking in the untouched, rugged, off the beaten track – and reportedly quite dangerous – Fish River Canyon has proved a little too risky for the average tourist to do alone. A few unfortunate accidents led the authorities to introduce restrictions. Fortunately, it's still very possible (and perhaps even necessary) to explore the canyon with a guide. The temperatures can get extremely high, it’s easy to lose your bearings, and the terrain is simply challenging. Whether you opt for a full or half-day hike, don’t underestimate the climb.
3. Guided drive through the Fish River Canyon
Admiring the immense Fish River Canyon from the various viewpoints is already spectacular, but driving through it allows you to experience its vastness on an entirely different level. As you descend into the canyon, the rock formations grow taller, and the cliffs become steeper, until it feels as if you are literally driving into the earth itself. And in a way, that’s exactly what’s happening. Let’s be honest – to the untrained eye, the landscape might seem similar throughout, but in reality, there is a fascinating variety to discover. Let expert guides open your eyes to the geological wonders of each rock face and formation.
