Butare (huye)

It was once known as Astrida, named after the Belgian Queen Astrid. This city was also regarded as the intellectual hub of Rwanda—perfect for a visit to the museum!

Huye, known as Butare among Rwandans

This city is now officially called Huye, but among Rwandans, it is still widely known as Butare. During the Belgian colonial rule, it was established under the name Astrida, after the Belgian Queen Astrid. It was once one of the most important cities in Rwanda and is still regarded as an intellectual hub today.

Huye is home to the country's oldest university, the bilingual National University of Rwanda, founded in 1963, along with numerous research institutions. Among other fields, traditional medicine is studied here in combination with modern science. In addition to medicine, food and agriculture are also key faculties at this university.

That’s all well and good, but you’re probably not visiting Rwanda to tour a university. So, what else is there to do in Butare? A visit to the former National Museum, now known as the Ethnographic Museum, is a great option. It offers deep insights into the history of Rwanda and neighbouring Burundi. Nearby, you’ll also find the King’s Palace Museum, home to the sacred, bead-adorned long-horned cows. A fascinating stop that’s well worth a visit!

Genocide Memorial

This is also a city that, under the leadership of Tutsi prefect Jean-Baptiste Habyalimana, managed to resist the impending genocide for two weeks in April 1994. Nearby, you will find one of the country’s genocide memorials, the Murambi Genocide Memorial Centre, housed in a former school.

Tutsis were lured here and brutally murdered by the Hutu militia. It is an incredibly moving site, but only for those with a strong stomach—many of the mummified bodies remain on display, serving as a haunting reminder of this tragic chapter in history.

Cathedral

But enough history. While you're in Butare, it's also worth visiting the cathedral, built in 1930 and the largest in the country. If you're lucky, you might be treated to loud and proud gospel singing as you step into this impressive building.

And after a day full of discoveries, you’ll probably want to unwind. How about indulging in a delicious ice cream from Inzozi Nziza or sipping a quality cup of coffee at CXC Coffee Shop? A perfect way to wrap up an intellectually stimulating day!
