Discover the mystical Aberdares in Kenya

Looking for a place of mysticism and tranquility where you can walk endlessly? Aberdare National Park has it, you can go mountain climbing and fishing in the middle of nature. Only 180 km from Nairobi and filled with immense green beauty, the perfect escape from the city.

Incredibly beautiful, diverse natural landscapes

The Aberdare National Park was established in 1950 and covers some 767 square kilometres. So you’ll be busy for a while. It’s a real paradise for nature lovers, thanks to the beautiful, green and varied landscapes.

The park is known for its impressive waterfalls that thunder into the misty ravines. Admire the beautiful Karuru Falls, for example, whose crystal-clear waters plunge 300 metres down, or the spectacular Gura Falls on the other side of the same gorge.

Above the tree line, the landscape becomes even more spectacular with mountainous terrain covered in dense tropical forests. A belt of bamboo vegetation, for example, is the favourite hiding place for the rare forest antelope. At 3000 metres, the bamboo then turns into peatlands that are somewhat reminiscent of the European highlands.

A little history

Besides the natural beauty and splendor, the Aberdare Mountains also have a rich cultural and historical significance. The Kikuyu, the largest ethnic group in Kenya, consider these mountains sacred. During the Mau Mau uprising in the 1950s against British colonial rule, the tough freedom fighters hid in the densely forested Aberdares, a top hideout!
