Family trip to Uganda

Adventure for the whole family

Uganda might not be the first country that comes to mind for a family trip, but that’s exactly what makes it such a great destination. It’s full of surprising and unique experiences, diverse landscapes and cultures, and there’s something fun to do for all ages. From slowly drifting between the islands of Lake Bunyonyi to wild white-water rafting on the Nile, from easy bike rides through villages to cooking with our Ugandan friends. Uganda is one big adventure for the whole family.

Rafting near Bwindi: Family floating through the trees

When you think of rafting in Uganda, you’re probably picturing the wild waters of Jinja. But there’s a much calmer and family-friendly option too: rafting near Bwindi. Between Queen Elizabeth National Park and Bwindi, there’s a stretch of river tucked between green hills that’s perfect for families.

The water is gentler than in Jinja, making it ideal for young kids and even grandparents. The small rapids come in a nice flow, just exciting enough but always safe. We call it family floating: adventure without the stress. And with the jungle all around, it honestly feels like you’re in a movie.

It’s a fun, peaceful way for the whole family to enjoy nature from the water.

Crater lakes: Canoeing, hiking and relaxing with a view

Near Fort Portal you’ll find the famous crater lakes, sparkling water surrounded by lush greenery. It’s a great place to unwind, but also to be active. Grab a canoe and paddle along the reeds together, or go for a walk with lake views all around. The trails vary in length, so you can easily choose one that suits the kids’ energy levels.

Cooking with Unity and Noah: Local flavors and warm hearts

A favorite around the crater lakes is definitely the cooking class with Unity. You all join her in the kitchen and learn to prepare traditional Ugandan dishes. The kids help with chopping, stirring and, of course, tasting, with amazing views over the green hills.

It’s perfect for kids from around 5 years old and honestly, a lot of fun for the parents too.

Bigodi swamp walk: Learning through nature

At Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, you’ll walk on wooden paths through the swamp, searching for monkeys, birds and unique plants. The guides explain everything in a fun and interactive way, perfect for curious little explorers. It can be a bit much for toddlers, but kids between 5 and 10 usually love it.

Adventure in Uganda for teens

Traveling with teens who want a bit more action? Uganda has loads of options for older kids looking for excitement, like:

  • Motorbike tours with a guide
  • Mountain biking or quad rides in Jinja
  • Ziplining and abseiling at Sipi Falls
  • A city tour of Kampala (even better from the back of a motorbike—cool and exciting for teens)
  • Beer tasting for the parents, but also a fun cultural experience for older teens (16+)

Safari with kids: Much more than just sitting in a jeep

A safari in Uganda is exciting and surprisingly diverse. Besides the classic game drives, there are lots of other fun and age-appropriate ways to spot wildlife:

  • Boat safaris are super relaxing and packed with animals
  • Walking safaris are perfect for curious, active kids
  • Horseback safaris are seriously cool
  • Biking safaris are great, especially in Lake Mburo
  • Night safaris are amazing for slightly older kids who love a thrill

These different kinds of safaris make it easy to find something for every age, from toddlers to teens.

Holiday to Uganda?

Primate tracking: Only for the big kids

Uganda is famous for its gorillas and chimpanzees, but these experiences do have age limits:

Seeing these animals in real life is unforgettable, but keep in mind that the hike can be tough. Definitely worth it for anyone old enough though!

Local experiences: Homestays and village visits

No family trip is complete without a peek into real Ugandan life—and that’s where our homestays come in!

The oldest one is with Tom, who lives on a tiny island in Lake Bunyonyi near the Rwandan border. His whole extended family lives off-grid here, growing their own food and raising animals. There’s barely any electricity, no WiFi, just peace and quiet. The kids can play football until sunset, and then everyone gathers around the campfire for stories.

Another amazing homestay is with Moses, near Sipi Falls. Here you’ll learn everything about coffee and mountain life, surrounded by stunning waterfalls. A short drive away, you can also visit Mengya, a forgotten village with lots of authenticity. You’ll walk through the greenery, see traditional homes, and hear the fascinating story of the Mukuuso Cave.

These homestays are fun and welcoming for all ages.

Entebbe and Lake Victoria: The perfect end to your trip

After all that adventure, it’s time to relax. Lake Victoria is a great spot to chill. Enjoy fresh fish, cycle by the water, or go birdwatching at Mabamba Swamp—where, if lucky, you’ll spot the rare shoebill!

Jinja and the Nile: For the water lovers

Alternatively, you can wrap things up in Jinja, near the Nile. Older kids will love the action here: rafting (the wild kind), kayaking, mountain biking, horse riding, and quad biking.

It’s a bit more intense than the family floating near Bwindi, so best suited for teens and adventurous parents.

Why choose Uganda for a family trip?

Because it’s something different. No overcrowded safari parks, but peace, space and authenticity. No cookie-cutter vacations, but real adventure. And since it’s less popular than Kenya or Tanzania, you’ll get more of that off the beaten track feeling.

The best part? Uganda truly has something for every family member. Hope to see you soon!
