Mountain gorillas in Rwanda and the Virunga mountains

The best place to find gorillas is in the Virunga Volcanoes mentioned below. Dive into the jungle and search for the world's largest primate. A life-changing encounter and a truly unique experience!

Mountain gorillas in Rwanda

Almost everyone knows a famous gorilla, like Bokito, who escaped from his enclosure at Rotterdam Zoo in 2007. Or the albino gorilla Snowflake from Barcelona Zoo. And then there’s Shabani, who drives Japanese women crazy at Higashiyama Zoo. This last one has even been declared the world's sexiest gorilla!

Yes, gorillas are extraordinary animals—masculine, tough, and majestic. Especially the mountain gorilla, the most famous of the four gorilla species, is truly special. Females grow to about 130-150 cm, but males can reach up to 185 cm! A large number of these gorillas can be found in Rwanda. In Volcanoes National Park, on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, you’ll find the most.

The Virunga Mountains and their beauty

The Virunga Mountains are an incredibly beautiful region, spread across three countries: the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, and Rwanda. Here, you’ll find eight volcanoes, two of which are still active. Hike up to the crater rim of these giants and, once at the top, enjoy the stunning views that stretch out to the various crater lakes in the area.

The rainforest in this region is home to an incredible variety of wildlife, from 22 species of primates to elephants, and from hundreds of bird species to the most stunning butterflies. But this area is best known for its mountain gorillas. Sadly, only a few remain in the wild due to years of poaching. Fortunately, there are also dedicated people who protect these gorillas and continue to risk their lives to save them from extinction.

Dian Fossey

One of the hit documentaries on Netflix was even dedicated to this subject. This is also the reason why this park is now so incredibly popular! Do you remember the Golden Globe-winning film Gorillas in the Mist? Well, Dian Fossey, the famous primatologist the film was about, conducted her research here in Volcanoes National Park and fought to protect her beloved gorillas from poachers.

This didn't make her many friends, and unfortunately, she was brutally killed because of it. And the perpetrators of this terrible act? Who they are is still a mystery… was it the government, or were they poachers? Either way, Dian is buried here, and you can take a beautiful hike to her grave and that of her favourite gorillas. A great walk in this fantastically beautiful rainforest! And maybe you'll even encounter a tough gorilla, as they can be found here too.

Why are gorilla treks so expensive?

A frequently asked question is why gorilla treks are so expensive. The costs are largely attributed to the strict conservation measures required to protect these endangered animals. The number of visitors is limited to avoid stress for the gorillas, and the revenue from permits is used for anti-poaching patrols, conservation efforts, and supporting local communities. The money you spend directly contributes to the survival of these majestic creatures.

What can you expect during a trek? A gorilla trek usually begins early in the morning. Equipped with sturdy hiking boots, a rain jacket, and plenty of enthusiasm, you depart under the guidance of rangers. The trek can vary from an hour to a whole day, depending on where the gorilla family is located. The moment you finally find them is magical. You have an hour to observe the gorillas: how they play, eat, and communicate with each other. It is an intimate and unforgettable experience that often leaves a lasting impression.

Imagine this: you're standing in the middle of the forest, surrounded by greenery, and there, just a few meters away, sits an imposing silverback. His gaze is intense and wise, as if he's looking straight into your soul. Around him, young gorillas play in the grass while the females peacefully eat leaves. It's a moment of pure connection with nature, a memory that will stay with you forever.

Alternative locations for gorilla trekking
In addition to Volcanoes National Park, there are other fantastic places to spot gorillas, such as Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda. Each park has its own unique charm and offers a slightly different experience, but all focus on sustainability and conservation efforts.
