Spot the little five
Watch the towering dunes pass by; it’s hard to imagine that all sorts of tiny creatures live here and that it’s not just endless grains of sand. Curious about which Little Five you might spot here?

How to Spot the Little Five?
The guide carries a small box of worms in his pocket to lure ‘wild’ animals. On your hands and knees, you crawl through the sand as the guide gently sweeps away layer by layer, hoping to uncover a creature. Each animal has its own way of surviving in the desert. Curious about what you might spot in the arid desert? Below, all five of these little creatures are explained.
Cartwheeling Spider
The most remarkable thing about this spider is its reaction to threats, which immediately explains its other name, the "wheel spider." Fully stretched out with tense legs, it throws itself sideways like a ninja star, rolling down the sand dune at a speed of one metre per second, fleeing from its attackers. As if dancing, it then buries itself about 40 cm underground, where it patiently waits until night falls to go hunting for food.

Shovel-snouted Lizard
Its large feet allow it to run effortlessly at high speed over the sand of the Namibian dunes. The fun part? It leaves a very amusing trail behind. To avoid burning its little feet on the hot sand, it lifts one of its limbs every few seconds, making it look as if it dances through life.
Namaqua Chameleon
The world's fastest chameleon lives in the Namibian dunes. Its speed is essential for hunting the tiny beetles in its habitat. Unlike other chameleons, its colours are less vibrant and are primarily used to regulate its body temperature. In the cooler mornings, it turns much darker to absorb as much warmth as possible, becoming lighter as the temperature rises.
Palmato Gecko
Its large eyes provide a constant panoramic view of the landscape as it moves, and due to the lack of eyelids, it regularly uses its long tongue to clean them. The webbing between its feet allows this creature to move swiftly, and its unique colour patterns make it nearly invisible to predators.

Fitzsimons Burrowing Skink
This mini viper is best known for its unique horizontal pattern that it leaves behind when it moves above the ground, which it only does when it’s cool outside. The rest of the time, it hides under a thin layer of sand through which it “swims”.
