Crater Lakes Motortour
Once, the Crater Lakes were a wild and volcanic landscape. Now, you can zoom through the lush jungle on a motorbike, over the hills. Discover the crystal-clear lakes, rows of banana plants, small farms, and thundering waterfalls!

Nature lovers, take note: in western Uganda, you might just find everything you've ever dreamed of. On the border with Congo stands the mighty, rugged Rwenzori Mountains, home to the third-highest peak in Africa. Lush forests at the base, glaciers, and powdered snow at the summit. With the Rwenzori Mountains looming on the horizon, you can explore the Crater Lake Area. As the name suggests, this area was once a wild, volcanic landscape with bubbling lava. Today, it’s peaceful green hills with crystal-clear crater lakes, charming villages, endless rows of banana trees, and countless stunning viewpoints. And that's not all: right next to the Crater Lake area, you'll also find dense, steamy jungles where chimpanzee families live, and where Tarzan could almost be swinging from vines in a loincloth, roaring.
In this area, where jungle, lakes, and mountains meet, you’ll also discover another ecosystem: the mysterious Bigodi Swamp. Standing high among the lush greenery, listening to the birds sing, and gazing over a peaceful blue lake, you'd never guess that this landscape was once the fierce stage for fiery volcanic activity 8,000 to 10,000 years ago. Today, these wild volcanoes have calmed down, and tranquility has returned. The result? A rolling landscape dotted with mirror-smooth crater lakes, perfect for a hearty hike, a swim, birdwatching, or even motocrossing through the jungle.
Crater Lakes
Fort Portal is a charming little African town (with a great Italian serving stone-baked pizzas and even a restaurant that sells Dutch croquettes! Just in case you find it hard to let go of your roots). The green hills surrounding Fort Portal are dotted with Crater Lakes. Around these tropical Crater Lakes, you'll find small farms and rows upon rows of banana trees. Lake Nkuruba is often considered the most beautiful, and to be honest, it really is. This small lake is tucked away in dense jungle, where monkeys fly around you.

Motortour
The best – and most fun – way to visit the lakes is from the back of a motorbike. Whether in a large group or with your family: hop on with experienced riders and race through the Ugandan hillside landscape! During this motor tour, you’ll visit all the hidden gems and rough diamonds found in the Crater Lake Area. You'll pass through many small villages with clay houses and cute farms. You can shower under a waterfall, hike to stunning viewpoints where you can see the crater lakes from a bird's-eye view, and, of course, end up by the shores of the same lake. There are few lakes in (East) Africa where you can swim without a care, but the Crater Lakes are delightful, rare swimming gems. A perfect way to finish a day of motorbike rides or hikes with a cold drink and a dip in the refreshing water!
Stamping and splashing through the swamp!
As you inhale the fresh air deeply, you listen to the orchestra of sounds: bird choirs singing in unison, insects making noises unlike anything you've heard before, and other sounds you can't place—could it be a monkey? A bird? Or is it just the squelching of your boots in the mud? When the swamp water rises high enough to almost submerge your boots, a wooden path appears, resembling a rickety bridge over the murky water. It feels as though you've accidentally wandered into a mysterious fairytale book: silence surrounds you, and tropical plants and palms tower above, forming a canopy overhead.
The guide accompanying you is a walking encyclopedia, sharing fascinating facts about life in the swamp. Edible plants that can soothe your wheezing cough? Simple flowers from which you can brew an alcoholic drink that also cures malaria? You'll also learn about the various birds and monkeys: can you spot John, the Red-and-white Colobus?
Put on your wellies and let’s go for it!
For this swamp walk, it’s a good idea to wear comfortable clothes and make sure you have rain boots ready! If they won’t fit in your suitcase or backpack, no worries – the guide has a few spare pairs for you. Since it rains quite a bit in this area, bringing a rain jacket is also useful. Birdwatcher? A pair of binoculars wouldn’t hurt either! The Bigodi Swamp walk lasts between two to four hours, depending on how much you want to learn about the surroundings! (If you want to hear the life story of every creature you meet along the way, it might take a little longer.)
The swamp walk is easy to combine with many other experiences. You can do it on the same day as the thrilling chimpanzee trek in the jungle. Staying in the area for a few days? Then don’t miss the cosy, nearby town of Fort Portal, or hop on the motorbike to zoom past all the crater lakes. Not much of a motorbike enthusiast or travelling with small children? Then the Bigodi Swamp walk is a fantastic alternative!
