Watersports in Cape Town

When you think of Cape Town, you think of water, wind, and waves. Its location creates unique weather phenomena: Cape Town has a Mediterranean climate, while the rest of the country has a subtropical climate. Perfect for adventurers and sun worshippers!

It’s no surprise that many water sports enthusiasts travel to this southwestern tip of Africa during the Dutch winter. Here, you can enjoy excellent opportunities for surfing, sailing, kitesurfing, and windsurfing. But where exactly should you go? And what can you do there? Let me explain!

Kite- and windsurfing in Blouberg

Blouberg is also known as Table View. Why? From this angle, you can see just how flat the mountain really is. The wind has been blowing over this mountain for centuries in such a way that this unique shape has formed.

At the back of Table Mountain, the wind is pushed upwards and accelerated: this causes Blouberg to experience a strong wind from the southeast almost every day from late December to late March. And this results in high waves, perfect for windsurfing or kitesurfing. It's no surprise that many well-known competitions, like the Red Bull King of the Air, are held here.

Which spots are there in Blouberg?

In Blouberg, you’ll find various spots. You should head to Sunset Beach for the highest waves. If you prefer kitesurfing and a fun après-kitesurf session, head to Pakalolo at Dolphin Beach! You’re likely to run into a few professional kitesurfers there.

If you want flat water, waves, and a wild surf simultaneously, the best place to go is Big Bay. This small village has a great kitesurf spot, with part of it being more sheltered. This means there are areas with flat water for your best wakestyle tricks. The true die-hard windsurfers, however, head to Melkbosstrand, as this area has very steep waves for making the highest jumps.

Surfing in Muizenberg

One of the most photographed spots in South Africa is perhaps Muizenberg. The colourful beach huts stand out brightly against the expansive beaches and surrounding mountains. The waves break far from the shore here, making it a perfect spot for surfing. Because Muizenberg is situated in a large bay, the water here is a bit warmer than at Blouberg. And of course, that's quite nice too!

Wakeboarding, waterskiing or diving at Blue Rock

About an hour's drive outside of Cape Town is Blue Rock, an old granite mine that has filled up with crystal-clear water. What do South Africans do with it? That's right, they build a cable system to wakeboard or waterski behind. On the cable, you can speed along at 30 kilometres per hour with up to 10 friends in tow. For the real thrill-seekers, there are a few jumps in the water. Success is guaranteed after a couple of beers! At its deepest point, the lake is even 65 metres deep, making it perfect for diving. Just don’t combine that with the beers!

Sailing, wakeboarding, kitesurfing, and windsurfing in Langebaan

About an hour and a half's drive from Cape Town is Langebaan: a versatile watersports paradise, also home to 'Die Strandloper,' one of the best restaurants in South Africa. Langebaan is located on the Saldanha Bay and is surrounded by water. There are several kite- and windsurfing spots to be found. For example, Shark Bay is perfect for taking lessons, as the water retreats twice a day so far that it only reaches up to your knees. From the Langebaan Yacht Club, you can book a sailing trip, wakeboard, or rent a boat to head out on your own.
